Easy indoor projects to boost your home’s value

Home improvements

As a Realtor and lifelong fan of do-it-yourself projects, I’ve always believed homeowners are more than capable of improving their space – and in turn, increasing the value of their home. In fact, I’ve spent hours curating a collection of DIY videos on my real estate website for my clients.

That said, I also understand that not everyone feels comfortable taking on plumbing or electrical work. So, for those who may be a little nervous about tackling home improvement, here’s a list of beginner-friendly, indoor DIY projects that are budget-conscious, heatwave-safe and pack a real punch when it comes to resale value.

Upgrade cabinet hardware

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to modernize your kitchen or bathroom is by replacing cabinet knobs and drawer pulls.  After years of use, they can look worn, outdated or mismatched. With just one tool, you can swap them out in a single afternoon. Local hardware stores, online shops and even the Habitat ReStore often have great selections at all price points.

Refresh window treatments

Still rocking those old metal blinds? Upgrading to curtains, bamboo shades or modern blinds can drastically improve the look of a room. Most online retailers offer easy measuring guides, step-by-step instructions and even video tutorials so you can install them with confidence.

Install a smart thermostat

It might sound intimidating, but most smart thermostats use low-voltage wiring and come with detailed instructions for replacing a wide range of old units. Not only does this project give your home a tech-forward feel, but it can also increase energy efficiency and give you more control over your HVAC system.

Replace outlet covers and switch plates

A quick and inexpensive fix, replacing old, cracked or paint-covered outlet covers can instantly freshen up a room. At around a dollar a plate, this is one of the most affordable upgrades you can make and it doesn’t require any special tools.

Repaint interior walls

If you’re ready for a slightly bigger project, painting is one of the highest ROI (return on investment) updates you can do yourself. Neutral, modern paint colors can transform a dated space, making it more attractive to potential buyers and helping your home sell faster.

Lastly, if you have read through this list and are still not convinced that you can tackle any of these projects, I have one last offer. Declutter! While this might be the MOST daunting task, it requires no money, and you can start small and go room by room. In my experience, a clean and organized home is the easiest to sell, and the most enjoyable to live in!
