Spring is finally here, and unlike previous years, Lynchburg endured some snow and ice-filled winter storms, and now your home is probably in need of some post-winter TLC. April and May are the perfect months to address any damage left behind and prepare your home for the warmer months ahead. Here are some key maintenance tasks to add to your checklist.
Inspect your roof, gutters
Winter storms can wreak havoc on your roof. Check for missing or damaged shingles, leaks and any signs of water damage. While you’re up there (or supervising a professional), clear out your gutters. Leaves, twigs and winter debris can cause blockages, leading to water damage when those April showers roll in.
Check for exterior damage
The freeze-thaw cycle can be rough on your home’s exterior. Walk around and inspect your siding, brickwork and foundation for cracks or damage. If you see gaps, reseal them to prevent further deterioration and keep out pests looking for a cozy home. You can now get mortar patch in a caulking tube for easy repairs to crack.
Service your HVAC system
Your heating system has worked hard all winter, and now it’s time to get your cooling system in shape. Change your air filters, clean out vents and schedule an HVAC tune up. This ensures your system runs efficiently when those hot and humid Virginia summer days arrive.
Revive your lawn, garden
When I look at my boxwoods that took a major beating this winter, I debate whether I should pull them out and just start over. The weather left our yards looking a little worse for wear. Rake up any leftover leaves, even aerate your lawn, and start seeding and fertilizing for a lush green yard if you’ve got the energy. Also, trim back shrubs and trees, especially any branches that could pose a risk to your home during summer storms before they get loaded down with flowers, pollen or new leaves.
Check windows and doors
Cold weather can cause seals around windows and doors to shrink or crack, leading to drafts and energy loss. Inspect for gaps and reseal with caulk or weather stripping as needed. This not only helps with energy efficiency but also keeps out pesky springtime insects. Check your screens, replacing a torn or worn screen is a fairly easy and inexpensive DIY project and will allow you to keep the windows open during the cool spring morning. Taking the time to tackle these maintenance tasks in April and May will help keep your home in great shape for the months ahead. A little effort now can prevent costly repairs down the road, leaving you more time to enjoy the beautiful Virginia spring weather!
